Rockwool is one of the most popular and versatile mediums for growing vine crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers but is also suitable for the cultivation and colonization of many other types of plants.
This inert medium is made from basalt rock (solidified lava). First, the solid material is molten in a furnace at up to 1500 o C. Once liquified, the basalt is spun into threads and hardened in a kiln using hot air at 230 o C and compressed into wool packets, then cut into slabs, blocks, or plugs wrapped with a plastic cover. This sterile material is very porous, has a good water holding capacity, is used for seedlings' growth, and can be used in combination with NFT systems or with a dripping system.
It has a very high capacity to retain nutrient solutions and high oxygen levels for rapid plant growth. Predrilled planting holes make seeding and plant propagation a breeze. Great for both hobby and commercial growers.
